About Sankeien Garden:

Sankeien is a Japanese garden built by Hara Sankei, a notable entrepreneur in the production and trade of silk in Yokohama. Opened to the public in 1906, this expansive garden of some 175,000 square meters features several structures of historical value relocated from Kyoto, Kamakura and elsewhere that are artfully integrated in harmony with the landscapes.

Also known for its associations with the art world and fostering emerging artists, Sankeien provided the inspiration for many modern “Nihonga” (Japanese style painting using monochrome & polychrome pigments made from natural materials) masterpieces, including “Mikoshi-buri (Dynamic Procession of a Float Shrine)” by Maeda Seison, “Ryuin (In the Shade of Willows)” by Yokohama Taikan and “Yoroboshi (The Beggar Monk)” by Shimomura Kanzan.

The gardens suffered severe damage during WWII, and the Hara family donated the property to Yokohama City in 1953, leading to the establishment of the Sankeien Hoshoukai Foundation. The foundation has since worked to restore and preserve the gardens for people from around the world to enjoy.

Visitors can appreciate Sankeien throughout the year: the garden’s fascinating landscapes of natural beauty ranging over the four seasons, seasonal events, as well as exhibits, a restaurant and café in the Sankeien Memorial Hall

On this tour, a dedicated guide will explain the garden’s history and features to ICCA AP Summit participants via earphones. Social distance will be maintained as you stroll and enjoy Sankeien’s early winter landscape.

In 2007, the entire garden was designated as a national site of scenic beauty, and today it remains highly regarded for its cultural significance.

Virtual Segway Tour

About Segway Tours in Yokohama:
Yokohama City has been spearheading efforts to enable tours on the two-wheeled scooter Segway to operate in Yokohama, just like the tours in many other cities around the globe. Under Japanese law, Segways are normally not permitted on public roads. Therefore, starting in 2017 successive tests were conducted in Yokohama and in 2019, the city obtained approval to operate Segway tours for the general public on metropolitan waterfront roads, as a type of “field operational test.” Yokohama is the only place in Japan where these tours are available.

You’ll almost feel the refreshing breezes coming in off the bay as you enjoy the guided Segway tour around the Minato Mirai area and the sights & sounds unique to Yokohama along with its history, including Kishamichi Promenade, Red Brick Warehouses area, Zou-no-Hana Terrace, Osanbashi International Passenger Ship Terminal, Hammerhead ship terminal & multi-purpose complex and more.

During the virtual tour, you’ll see a 30-min. video of Dr. Keiko Nishimoto, Chair of the ICCA AP Summit 2020, and executives of the Local Host Committee actually participating in the Segway tour onsite!
